“Making Mouse Memories”
In this news article from
Sciencenews.org, scientists study the possibility of creating new memories. For
the study, scientists put rats in different types of rooms. For example, a room
with white opaque walls and a room with green walls in which the rats were
shocked upon entering. The scientists studied the brain activity in the test
rats during the study and then genetically engineered mice so that only the
cells active during the memory of the rooms were present in the mouse. The team
of scientists was successful in creating the memories of the various rooms in
the genetically engineered mice. In other words, creating a “synthetic” memory
in the mice. As far as science goes, it is a big step forward in the direction
of understanding how memories are created and erased in our brains.
For the
collage I will be using scientific related imagery. For example, brains, mice,
scientists, scientific tools, etc. I would like to incorporate a picture of a
rat’s brain that is half normal and half robotic. This would be to show the
“genetically engineered” theme of the article. I will also be incorporating the
various memories that were injected into the mice. For example, there would be
a room with white opaque walls. For the illustrator vector-based object, I may
be creating either the brain of the rat or one of the scientific tools that a
scientist would use to work on a rat’s brain. For the image I will take myself,
I will be taking a picture of either my pet rat’s head, or finding a room with
white opaque walls.
