Carswell Project 5 Research and Thumbs

For Project 5, I am thinking I will use this article from the Washington Post: "Advocates of the Plain Writing Act prod federal agencies to keep it simple." It is about legislation to make the wording in legal and political documents understandable to common people and not a bunch of "mumbo-jumbo."

I envision having an antique-looking scroll or document of some sort with visually fancy writing on it somewhere in the frame, whether it's the primary focus or a supporting element. I'm thinking I could have an image as the main focus or I could have text as the focus (with supporting images). If I make text the focus, I would make sure to draw attention to the contrast between "fancy" words and simple words--both visually and literally.

As for what I could do in Illustrator, I'm considering creating either the text, the scroll, or a magnifying glass. One of my thumbs has a magnifying glass hovering over a fancily written legal document, and magnified in the middle of the glass is the word "plain" in a very simple font. I am leaning towards that idea because it conveys in a simple but strong way what the focus of the article is. The document (with fancy writing) would be a photo, and I'm thinking I would either use a photo of the word "plain" written out as my original photo or a photo of the Texas State Capitol in the background of the composition.
