The article I found to illustrate is one from the New York Times. It is in regards to a growing trend in hospitals having emergency rooms for the elderly. The aging population of baby boomers has lead to an increase in the need for medical services, so hospitals have begun to have a different approach for the elderly. By isolating them from the hustle and bustle of the E.R. patients are able to relax and be treated in a quieter environment that is described as a “clinic setting.” The hospitals and some doctors however are concerned that the new program may come across as a marketing scheme for the elderly. However, doctors have noticed a decrease in geriatric patients coming into the E.R. which is a great sign according to the article, because studies show “ Being treated in the emergency room is often the beginning of a slide for older patients: within three months of being sent home, up to 27 percent have another emergency, are admitted to the hospital or die…” Therefore, the method seems to be working. Patients who are happier are more receptive to treatment. So far my idea to visually convey the summary of the article is to have a sign, similar to those at theme parks that say “must be this tall to ride” but instead have the sign say must be this age to enter. I plan on shooting my original image in a hallway that forks or splits. I’ll super impose hospital signs leading people/patients to either the geriatric wing or the regular E.R. room based on their age.
