Wimberley_P4 Reference & Thumbs

In this work I intend to create a collage composition that represents the day in a life of a barista. As a barista myself I am thoroughly familiar with this life. There are a wide variety of components to being a barista. The first and undoubtedly most important is crafting coffee. A skilled barista has to use the highest quality coffee, professional equipment, fresh milk and other ingredients in order to produce a perfect cup of coffee. He also has to have the skill, talent and passion to wield these components. Besides preparing coffee, a barista also has to interact with the customers. It is his job to make customers feel welcome, to educate and to impart his passion about coffee to them.

Though the job primarily centers of preparing coffee and customer service, the appeal of being a barista extends further. A coffeehouse is often much more than simply a place where customers buy and drink coffee. Often, they are a center of a community, a place where people build relationships. They often serve as a gallery of artwork, showcase live music and serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas.

There are numerous images I could use to represent visually all of these various components that a barista would experience in a day. Below is a list of these components:

  • Ingredients
    • Coffee Beans
    • Milk
  • Equipment
    • Grinder
    • Espresso machine
    • Portafilter
    • Various small wares (tamper, steaming pitchers, french presses, etc.)
  • Preparing of coffee
    • Steaming of milk
    • Pulling espresso shots
    • Pouring latte art
  • Customers
    • Interacting with baristas
    • Drinking coffee
    • Chatting amongst themselves
  • Community
    • Gallery artwork
    • Live music
    • Community flyer board

These are just a few of the possibilities of visual images to use in the development of this work.
