For my project I will be doing a day in the life of an
Alaskan King Crab Fisherman. Alaskan
king crab fisherman are probably one of the most well known fisherman on the
seas, mainly because of the popular Discovery channel TV show Deadliest Catch. Alaskan
king crab fishing is a very deadly job, with some saying that king crab fishing
has an 80 times higher mortality rate than the average job. It is also said
that on average one fisherman dies per week of the very short king crab fishing
season. Many deaths occur due to the typically rough seas and very frigid
temperatures of the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska, where a majority of
king crab fishing takes place. The peak king crab fishing season is very short,
sometimes lasting only a few weeks out of the year, making the job a rush to
produce as large of a catch as possible. Many think that because this job is
one of the most dangerous in the world that it would have a high payout, but
this isn’t always true. There is no annual pay, so it all depends on the catch
a boat makes that season. In a good season a fisherman might make $100,000 in
only a couple months, but during a bad season a fisherman could actually end up
losing money.
For my thumbnails I plan to include
images ranging from the fishing boats used, king crabs, the equipment used,
high seas, cold temperatures, fisherman, etc. I hope that my thumbnails will show
the hard work and hardships that Alaskan King Crab Fisherman have to deal with.
