Puente_P4 References & Thumbs

For this project, I’d like to create a collage illustration that depicts a day in the life of an astronaut.  For decades, astronauts have been hailed as great scientific explorers and heroes in American culture. For this reason, I would like my hand-illustrated portions of my composition to retain a sort of retro, space-age aesthetic. I believe that this helps recall the history of astronauts as well as emphasis the iconic nature of the job. The illustrated portion will most likely include the character of the astronaut, and other props such as rockets and other equipment.  In addition, I think it’s important for me to infuse the sense of curiosity and vast wonder that goes hand in hand with the concept of travel in space into my composition. I will achieve this by using my own photographs of the night sky- including images of the moon and vast planes of stars that will help communicate the cosmic nature of space. In this way, I will incorporate the astronaut’s point of view of the grandness of space while on a long mission. For the most part, I want these photographs to act as a backdrop to the composition, in order to work as an ever present, but not all-encompassing element. Some other imagery I’m interested in incorporating into my composition include the astronaut’s interaction with the space station, as well as other more normal and tedious activities involved in the daily life of an astronaut.

Here are some reference images:
