Sturm_P4 Thumbs

Runcie_P4 Reference

I am doing in the life of a void. They are all around us. From hair line cracks and large expanses of open fields in the physical world to loss of family and loved ones in the metaphysical. They all deal with the devoid of perceivable existence.  They can exist one moment and cease to exist once our existence fills the space; So, in essence, a void is the existence of nonexistence. I am choosing this because I am drawn to the manipulation of space and our perceptions of form and space. I find it important because our choice of spaces we occupy is equal important to our decision to avoid space. I plan on drawing an abstracted  understanding of a void as our understanding of a void would be blank space of white paper. Photo references will be of empty abandoned buildings, cracks and potholes on roads, large vaulted ceiling spaces, junkyards, and parks/ grass fields.

Raven Lankford Idea for project

For this assignment I have chosen to do A Day in the Life of Rick Perry. The work will be satirical, making fun of stupid things he has said or done and depicting his bigoted political beliefs. A few ideas of things I wish to portray are:

His anti-choice stance on abortion. Rick Perry is adamantly opposed to abortion and has stated that it is his ultimate goal to outlaw the procedure completely. He has signed several bills into law that restrict access to abortion in Texas.

His support for the death penalty. For someone who works so hard to take away a person’s right to abortion to ‘preserve the sanctity of human life’, Rick Perry sure does like killing people. Texas has carried out 234 executions since Rick Perry became governor. This is the highest number of executions for any governor during their term. Obviously Rick Perry has been in office a lot longer than most governors serve but 234 is still an overwhelmingly large number of executions. Behind Perry with the second highest number in executions is George W. Bush (surprise! Another Teas governor) with 152 executions. The third highest is the 25th governor of Oklahoma with 52 executions. Also, in June 2002, Perry vetoed a ban on the execution of mentally disabled inmates which is just really shitty.

His homophobia and Transphobia. Perry supported the 2005 ballot proposition which amended the Texas constitution by defining marriage as "only a union between a man and a woman" and prohibiting the state from creating or recognizing "any legal status identical or similar to marriage." During the 2012 presidential debate, he criticized the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. In 2011, although trans people could marry partners of the opposite sex, Perry said that he "never intended" to sign a bill allowing that privilege, and threatened to ban marriages for transgender people.

His ‘Oops’ moment. During a Republican Presidential debate in 2011, Rick Perry named the three agencies of government he would he would eliminate: “Commerce, Education, and uhh.. I can’t remember. Oops.”

He is a skeptic on global warming and evolution. Rick Perry has publicly expressed his skepticism of global warming. He has also said that ‘evolution is just a theory that is out there’ and he believes creationalism should be taught alongside evolution in public schools.

In my composition I plan to hand render a caricature/cartoon of Rick Perry as well as other elements I can’t get pictures of. I plan to photograph a Texas flag to use in my composition as well as other elements depending on which thumb I decide to go with.

I'm still deciding between two subjects. Although Im leaning towards my first idea at the moment.
One, a day in the life of a trucker. Thousands of miles in front and behind you, a family at home in another state waiting for your last run. And gas stations. Their showers, their food; their people. All aspects of a lonely truckers traveling lifestyle. They normally travel alone, they spend days, weeks, months on the road far away from their loved ones. And they do a job most of us wouldnt, and supply us with the products, and such, that we need.
Second, a day in the life of a forest. The trees and the animals, and the secrets that could be lurking around every corner. It's mystery. And its beauty. There are so many creatures and plants and things to explore in the forest. Its a completely different world from our own concrete one. I would want to put in the trees and some animals obviously, but I was also thinking about putting in the picture somehow a fictional forest creature, just to put emphasis on the mystery our own minds create.

I plan on trying to take a photo from the view of a stoplight; I'm still working on the details of how that's going to go down. Also I want to add some blur effects to the picture of either cars or just the background for the hand drawn part I was thinking of a monologue that the stop light might say everyday using type. I want to do a stoplight because everyday is a monotonous thing and to me a stop light is the epitome of that. I was also think to use a fish eye perspective just because its a different interesting view.

It took me a while to finally figure out what I wanted to do, but I ended up deciding to do A Day in the Life of an Austinite. Seemed like it would be easy to take photographs due to fact that is where I go every weekend (to go home). Austin, Texas is known as the music capitol of the world and is filled with vibrant entertainment and culture. I plan on using photographs that show the different things you can do in Austin, things such as: eating at the food trucks, outdoor activities, enjoying music (ACL, SXSW, etc.) and much much moreeee!
